MahaVir Chakra – India’s Second Highest Gallantry Award
Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) is India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award, presented for acts of exceptional bravery in the presence of the enemy on land, sea, or air. It honors soldiers who display unmatched courage during war or operations that involve direct combat.
History of MahaVir Chakra :
The MahaVir Chakra was instituted on 26 January 1950 as India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award, first conferred during the Indo-Pak War of 1947–48 to honor exceptional acts of bravery in combat. The award is given to personnel of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Reserve Forces for remarkable courage in the face of the enemy, and can also be awarded posthumously.
Bar to Mahavir Chakra :
Provision was made for the award of a bar for a second award of the MahaVir Chakra, the first two being awarded in 1965. To date, there are six known awards of a first bar:
